Green Grants Neighborhood Planting Program

Project Requirements
The following requirements should be considered when developing a proposal:

  • Projects must be located within the city of Washington, DC, and not on federally owned lands. Plantings on private property may be permissible if public access can be guaranteed.
  • Projects require a 50-50 match from non-federal funding sources. Matching funds can include in-kind services. Grant requests over $5,000 require an in-kind cash match for purchase of materials or services.
  • Funded and matching components of the proposal must be within the scope of the USDA Forest Service's Urban and Community Forestry Program guidelines. This includes participatory site planning and design, appropriate site preparation, and tree planting, improvement, and establishment activities.
  • Use of funds for hats, shirts, food, hardscape construction and maintenance, shrubs, flowers, vegetable gardens, and other non-tree related activities will likely not be funded.
  • Projects that incorporate tree planting with a coherent maintenance plan shall be prioritized.
  • Projects that focus solely on maintaining newly planted trees shall also be considered and prioritized.
  • Projects shall specify a clear and coherent maintenance plan for all plantings. Maintenance plans must identify a contact person who shall be responsible for implementation of the maintenance plan.
